2011 Sydney Telstra 500 review

2011 Review

On Saturday, Craig Lowndes made a brilliant victory in Race 27 of a seesawing title chase. Lowndes won the race despite spinning on his Top 10 Shootout lap and starting 10th, Lowndes worked his way through the order and took advantage of teammate Jamie Whincup hitting the fence to seal 150 championship points and drag himself to within 83 points going into the last race.

Lowndes seized the lead from Fujitsu Racing’s Michael Caruso on lap 61, who ran low on fuel and lost second to Garth Tander on the last lap, with Lowndes just beating Tander home by 0.8s and Caruso losing the final podium spot to Shane van Gisbergen at the last corner.

On Sunday, Jamie Whincup sealed his third V8 Supercar Championship, finishing eighth in a drama-filled final race of the year.

Winterbottom won Race 28, making him third place in the championship. Lowndes came in second in the race and SP Tools' Shane van Gisbergen rounded out the podium in third.
